L’origine des noms barbares de l’<i>Anecdotum Latinum</i>: Entre “mémoire collective et sociologie du bricolage” (R. Bastide)

International audienceA manuscript of late antiquity, the Anecdotum Latinum, shows that the formation and origin of "barbaric names" can sometimes be a real "do-it-yourself" operation. Some of the nomina barbara of this medical collection have a fortuitous origin: perfectly clear in the source used by the copyist, they have been made incomprehensible after a misreading. With the exception of these "fortuitous" names, most are relatively common: they come from a long tradition whose origins can be traced. Still others have an old patina, but are similar to a real work of deceit: if some of these formulas have a Jewish sound, they do not always correspond to a known model. The originality of the work is mainly due to the use of a very particular type of barbaric names: in the Anecdotum, kappa no longer designates only the tenth letter of the Greek alphabet, but it becomes a powerful name.Un manuscrit de l’Antiquité tardive, l’Anecdotum Latinum, montre que la formation et l’origine des « noms barbares » peut parfois être une véritable opération de bricolage. Certains des nomina barbara de ce recueil médical ont une origine fortuite : parfaitement clairs dans la source dont a pu se servir le copiste, ils ont été rendus incompréhensibles à la suite d’une mauvaise lecture. À l’exception de ces noms « fortuits », la plupart sont relativement courants : ils sont issus d’une longue tradition dont les origines peuvent être retracées. D’autres encore ont une patine ancienne mais s’apparentent à une véritable œuvre de forgerie : si certaines de ces formules ont une consonance juive, elles ne correspondent pas toujours à un modèle connu. L’originalité de l’ouvrage tient surtout à l’utilisation d’un type tout à fait particulier de noms barbares : dans l’Anecdotum, kappa ne désigne plus seulement la dixième lettre de l’alphabet grec, il devient un nom puissant
